Pizza, Yoga, Teachers, and a Mouth Full of Bees…

Though in Episode 2 of Dharma Drops, I mentioned my effort to groom listeners into loving me; the fact of the matter is you’ll love my first guest more. In this episode, I’m shootin’ the shiitake (iTunes won’t let me use “shit” in the title), with my dear friend, Angela David. Together, we had a beer and recorded a full length episode that covers topics from pizza to finding a yoga teacher to whether or not we want a mouth full of bees. You know, normal things two friends talk about over a beer.

You’ll have to listen to the whole episode to get the full scoop of our conversation, but here is a brief recap of our 30 minutes together.


Ordering pizza is for the youth: It turns out that ordering a pizza is a complicated task. The new pizza place in town doesn’t take phone orders for delivery. Our plan was to eat pizza, have a beer, and record. But it turned into a full debacle of downloading apps, join codes—and no pizza delivery. Luckily, Angela’s husband was sweet enough to pick up a pizza for us.

Finding a teacher: Angela has recently undertaken a new journey into another yoga teacher training. Currently, she is working toward her 300-hour certification under the tutelage of Annie Carpenter. We have had many talks over the years about finding yoga teachers. But we conclude in this section that we don’t seek out our teachers, they just arrive. And, hey, we don’t mention it on the podcast, but that’s true about all of life’s teachers. They show up when we are least expecting it.

Bow-Wow: Really, this is just your warning. In this episode and many more to come, you might hear dogs barking. Because dogs are awesome. Angela’s dogs were pretty pumped about the pizza. And they take over the podcast for a moment. My little french bulldog, Hank, doesn’t have a big bark, but if you listen closely in other episodes, you might be able to hear him snore.

The Delicate Balance: It’s difficult to balance opposing qualities. And it’s even harder to simultaneously use those qualities to teach. But, as Angela shares, her teacher, Annie Carpenter, teaches with both authority and nurturance. That in itself, quite possibly, is the act of yoga—being able to hold the space of multiple and opposing possibilities. And in turn, it allows others to experience those same possibilities. Or as we contextualize it, others can experience growth.

Honoring the Individual: Both Angela and I deeply believe in the value of the individual practice, in that each person experiences yoga differently. Of course, there are certain anatomical truths, but to suggest that yoga—even a specific family of āsana—must be a certain way dilutes the teachings.

When we say to be in a standing posture only means you are using your legs, we are actually watering down the teachings because the teachings are asking us to be fully present in the entire experience...to use the entire body.

The Expression of Spirit: Angela touches on the deeply important note that yoga isn’t just about getting into postures. In fact, it is not even really about the physical stuff. At the end, the practice of yoga is to convey Spirit—or the wholeness within. Really, you can call it what you want. But it is that which encompasses the fullness of Being. And the body is a container which holds that Spirit. Sure, the āsana practice gives us the insight to move closer to that sense of Spirit. But more than that, we learn how to use our bodies in the regular, physical world to convey Spirit.

The True Test of Friendship: Yup, it’s true. We are both murderinos and fans of My Favorite Murder. In fact, Angela is the one who introduced me to My Favorite Murder. After listening to a recent episode that shared listeners’ hilarious ice-breaker questions, I decided to see if Angela and I are on the same page. Are we really “yoga life partners”? Of course, the only scientific way to test our friendship is through these questions:

  • Would you rather be covered in feathers or fish scales?

  • Would you rather have snakes for arms or a mouth full of bees?

  • If you had the man of your dreams, perfect in every way, the only caveat is that he has lobster claws for hands, would you still love him?

You’ll have to listen to the episode to see if we really are true friends. But here’s a little secret…snakes for arms, for sure. Who wants a mouth full of bees?
